Teachers and Taught Garner Spotlight Tonight

Recently, members of Elizabethtown Chapter held their eleventh annual Graduate and Teacher Recognition Dinner during which the members who were graduating from high school and eleven area teachers who have made a difference in the lives of their students were honored in observance of DeMolay Education Day.

The evening included a lemon-pepper chicken dinner for the graduates, teachers and their families. A recognition program organized by the members and featuring the DeMolay Ceremony of Light performed by Michael Brown following the dinner.

A committee chaired by Matt Eberts planned the evening. Honored during the program were graduating members Past Master Councilor Shawn Vulatic; members Daniel Bryan, Scott Smith, and Frederick Sultana; and two-term Chapter Sweetheart Tori Robertson, who is currently serving as State Sweetheart. Teachers attending represented the Donegal Area School District, the Elizabethtown Area School District, the Middletown Area School District, and the Harrisburg Area School District.

Each of the teachers who attended was presented with a special certificate recognizing their efforts on behalf of educating their students. This special recognition program has grown from only honoring the graduating seniors of Elizabethtown Chapter in 1994, to including favorite teachers since 1996. Since 1996, 212 different teachers have been selected as their students' favorites, and 115 of them have attended one or more of the dinners. Fifty-four graduating seniors have been honored since the inception of the program.

In 2006, the following teachers were honored: Dana Baxter, Allison Bronson, Joanie Custer, Frank Flamini, Larry Forrey, Deb Houseal, Phyllis Schaeffer, Michael Schatz, Frank Telenko, Lisa Valenti and Michael Zupanovich.

This great Education Day Obligatory Observance continues to grow in popularity, and the interest in who will make the guest list from year to year has created some healthy competition among the teachers in the area Middle Schools and High Schools.
