Meet Ian Lang,
of Altoona, PA. Ian turned 18 the day this spotlight was posted,
so Happy Legal-To-Be-Drafted Day to you, Ian. Ian is a Senior at
Altoona Area High School, and is currently Master Councilor of his
Chapter. He's active in his church youth group and enjoys hanging
with his friends and doing "other teenage stuff" (that
leaves a lot of latitude, y'know, Ian?) He's also in a community
service class in school where he helps out in an elementary school
classroom. Can they always tell which one is the high school
student?
Ian joined DeMolay
to be able to hang out with other guys his age. He picked up on
one of the big advantages of our Order --you can meet people who
have similar values and ideas to you, but come from all different
backgrounds and are, in Ian's words "unique" and "kool"
(much better than just "cool," I'm told). He
likes the fact that in his Chapter, he can be heard and take leadership,
and not be written off as just a "kid."
We asked Ian
what is unique and unusual about him, and he said "I am."
We know Ian, and we're inclined to agree --but only in the best
way!
Getting
ready for graduation, Ian has already enlisted in the Army (so much
for that draft thing...) and hopes some day to go back to school
for a degree in Elementary Education (will the kids have to call
you "Sergeant?") He also wants to have a family some day,
and hopes his kids will get involved in Masonic youth groups like
he has.
He's into comics,
hockey and paintball (difference: in paintball, the blood is fake,
in hockey....) He likes punk and ska music, which may explain the
hardwear he's often wearing around his neck. He is, however, the
most clean-cut punk fan we've ever met. We think that's probably
because his girlfriend Gretchen makes him behave.
Ian is a graduate
of PA DeMolay's Key Man Conference
2000, and sends out a "hey" to "Doc," "Pooh"
(we didn't ask, so don't ask us) and the rest of Star Chapter 2000.
