Object to Consideration of a Motion

A member may object to the consideration of a motion when he feels the matter is entirely inappropriate for discussion by the group (for example, it is immoral, offensive, or contrary to the principles and purposes of the group). He may also object when the group is attempting to act on a matter over which they have no authority (for example, voting to do something they are prohibited to do by law or rules of the larger group). The objection allows the group to save time by not considering or debating a matter they cannot or should not act upon.

Here's how it works:

What to say: "I object to the consideration of this motion."
May you interrupt the speaker? Yes.
Do you need a second? No.
Can the motion be debated? No.
Can the motion be amended? No.
What vote is needed to pass? 2/3 majority. In this case, 2/3 "NO" votes are required to prevent the motion from being considered.
Can it be reconsidered? Yes, but only if the main motion has not yet been debated.
Example:
MEM1: "Brother Master Councilor, since Convention is here in town this year, I move we set aside the money we usually spend on a rental van to start a fund to buy a van for Chapter travel."
MEM2: "Second"
PRES: "The motion has been made and seconded. Is there any discussion?"
MEM2: "I object to the consideration of this motion. DeMolay International Rules and Regulations prohibit a local Chapter from owning a vehicle. There's no point to starting a fund we can never use. "
PRES: "An objection has been made to consideration of this motion. No second is required, and the objection is not debatable. A "Yes" vote is to allow us to consider the motion, a "No" vote is to agree with the objection and disallow the consideration of the current motion. All in favor say 'Yes.' All opposed say 'No.' The vote is unanimous in opposition to the consideration of the motion. The motion will not be considered."
