Motion to Reconsider

Ideally, this motion should seldom, if ever, be used. It is used to reconsider a hasty action taken by the group. Provided with the proper information, and using proper parliamentary procedure, hasty actions shouldn't generally happen! However, sometimes people are in a hurry to get a matter taken care of, or new information materializes after a decision is made, and reconsideration of a closed matter may be needed. It may be made immediately following the decision, later in the same meeting, or even in a later meeting.

Here's how it works:

What to say: "I move we reconsider the vote on..."
May you interrupt the speaker? Yes.
Do you need a second? Yes.
Can the motion be debated? Yes, unless the motion to be reconsidered was not debatable.
Can the motion be amended? No.
What vote is needed to pass? Majority.
Can it be reconsidered? No.
Example:
MEM1: "Mr. Chairman, I move we reconsider our previous vote on cancelling our charity fund-raiser for this term. I think it's really important that we go ahead with the charity project, even if we have to make it smaller than we planned."
MEM2: "I second the motion."

PRES: "There is a motion and second to reconsider our previous vote on the charity fund-raiser. Is there any discussion?" [None] "All in favor say 'Aye.' Opposed 'No.' The 'Ayes' have it. The motion is before us for consideration again. Mr. Secretary, will you read the motion back from the minutes?" [Done] "Is there any discussion? ..."

[The group may then proceed to debate, amend, and act on the original motion just as if it were being brought up for the first time.]
