Move to Table

Sometimes, it becomes obvious that a matter needs further study, or just some time for members to think before making a decision. When this happens, the motion can be "tabled," or temporarily set aside without making a decision. Tabling a motion is indefinite (that is, not for a set period. The motion remains tabled until the body acts to bring it back from the table. To put off consideration of a motion until a specific time, you should use a motion to postpone discussion, instead of a motion to table.

Here's how it works:

What to say: "I move to table the motion." or "I move to table the motion until ..."
May you interrupt the speaker? No, you must wait to be recognized.
Do you need a second? Yes.
Can the motion be debated? No.
Can the motion be amended? No.
What vote is needed to pass? Simple majority.
Can it be reconsidered? Only if it fails. Once a motion is sucessfully tabled, the motion to table cannot be reconsidered.
How about an example?
MEM1: "Mr. Chairman, we're not getting anywhere with this discussion now. I move to table this matter to give the members time to think it over."
PRES: "There is a motion to table the current motion. Is there a second?"
MEM2: "Second."
PRES: "The motion has been made and seconded. All in favor?"
20MEMS: "Aye!"
PRES: "Opposed?"
2MEMS: "No!"
PRES: "The 'Ayes' have it. The motion is tabled. A motion to recall it from the table will be required to bring it back to our consideration. Our next item of business is ..."
